There are numerous contenders to claim the title of “world’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.

As per a new book, though, that honor belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.

“Prior to automated cutting, constructing a simple trading ship necessitated around ten sawyers laboring over 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber could be produced within a week.”

Thanks to their speedy mechanical saw, that converted logs into planks using virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders could construct vessels more quickly than anyone else, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Netherlands naval, financial and cultural dominance across the continent and the world.

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues Dávila, was “mankind’s first true factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part transformed its circular motion to up-and-down motion to power the cutting blade. Another component changed that same rotary movement into a sideway’s motion feeding the timber to the cutter. A ratchet system moved the log ahead one precise increment per stroke.

“Each element seemed simple by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them in order that the machine operated in a precisely synchronized order, cutting on every descending motion while advancing with each return stroke. It was an astonishingly intelligent application of fundamental components.”
